What Made The Mentor: Exploring an Unknown Industry Through Trial and Error

The guidance of a mentor well-versed in a given field or industry is a massive advantage for the new undertaker, especially one with no prior experience in the said industry.

Aside from the technical side of things, some other benefits of mentorship include having someone to help the mentee focus and be his source of encouragement, and the mentee has a convenient source of a trustworthy second opinion. The mentor’s guidance, in general, will safeguard one from miscalculations, which could lead to significant losses. Some are blessed to have found mentors to guide them through their new ventures, but others carry on through trial and error despite not having such luxury.

Despite the numerous benefits of finding a mentor, it was the farthest thing on Marquiste Boyce’s mind when he began his ventures as an entrepreneur, which is why it took him a couple of false starts before he finally managed to get a profitable side hustle going. Now with an extensive background in online marketing through self-education and trial and error, he found his purpose in mentorship and helping others not make the same mistake he had made as a rookie.

By helping people understand the basics of marketing and lead generation, as well as efficient sales funnels, he has guided his mentees to get them through the process of building a side hustle that does not need to be sustained by constant management. Seeing his past self in their position, he is especially inclined to aspiring entrepreneurs and influencers who may get overwhelmed with the technicalities of technology.

Before he got into this position, he used to work in a corporate job. A native of Flint, Michigan, and the first of his generation to go to college, he moved to Atlanta to find better financial opportunities while climbing the corporate ladder. A few years later found him tired and burnt out with more than 75 hours of work each week.

In 2018, he had been in one of the beautiful islands of the Philippines, but not for fun. He was sent to train new employees for his company and outsource to cut back on company expenses. He spent his free time contemplating how to change his life. It was not the Bible that brought him his answer as he expected. Instead, he found the answers he needed out of a business book: Jay Abraham’s Getting Everything You Can Out of All You’ve Got.

The next few years had been full of experimentation and failures, which he took as learning opportunities. A failed crowdfunding for his original children’s series entitled Monster Academy nearly killed his dreams of entrepreneurship before it even took off.

Now he has monetized those experiences and currently earns as a consultant, as well as a few mobile apps and affiliate marketing as his side hustles. He is also currently serving as a mentor for several aspiring entrepreneurs.
